Regular female health checks can identify early signs of health issues, for example osteoporosis/ bone problems, breast and cervical cancers and heart issues.

Bone Health

  • Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more at risk of fracturing.
  • For all individuals, women and men, your bones are strongest and thickest until your mid 30s and you gradually start to lose bone strength from approximately age 35.
  • Females are typically more susceptible to weakening of their bones then males due to the decrease of oestrogen after menopause.
  • We at Midleton Medi Centre offer a range of supports and treatment from non-medical to medical interventions as well as referral for bone scans if required.

Breast Screening

Why is breast check and screening important?

  • Breast Cancer is the second most common cancer in women in Ireland, skin cancer being the most common.
  • Every year around 3,400 cases of breast cancer diagnosed in Ireland
  • 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
  • Breast cancer, when caught early, has the highest five year net survival rate, of 88%, but is the most common cancer in women in Ireland.

Importance of breast self-checks and Screening

It is important for women of all ages to regularly check their breasts for lumps and changes. If you have any concerns please speak to your GP.

Cervical Screening & Smear Test

Why Cervical Screening?

  • Over 250 women and people with a cervix in Ireland are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year.
  • Early detection of cervical cancer leads to improved outcomes.
  • 99% of cervical cancers can be attributed to Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
  • This means that with the help of the HPV vaccine, cervical cancer could in time be eradicated.
  • A cervical screening test (previously known as a smear test) looks to see if you might be at risk of developing cervical cancer.

  • Midleton Medi Centre is registered with the National Cervical Screening Programme/ Ladies between 25 and 65 are entitled to a free smear test every 3-5 years. In order to avail of this free smear you need to register with Cervical Check at www.cervicalcheck.ie or phone 1800 45 45 55. Please bring your letter of invitation for Cervical Check as well as your PPS number. Smear tests are best done midcycle (2 weeks after the first day of your last period). If you are no longer having periods you may book anytime.

Free Contraception Service

In Ireland, Women and people with a uterus aged 17 to 35 can get contraception for free. You do not need a medical card to access this service.

Menopause

Menopause usually starts between the age of 45 and 55. The average age for a woman to reach menopause is 51.

Early menopause happens when your periods stop before the age of 45.
