What is the Pneumococcal Vaccine?

The pneumococcal vaccine is also known as the pneumonia vaccine. It protects against pneumococcal disease.

Pneumococcal infection accounts for 50% of community-acquired pneumonia and bacteraemia, with an overall mortality rate reaching up to 25%. Additionally, it can lead to a range of other infections, such as sinusitis, osteomyelitis, bronchitis, and otitis media.

Who is most at risk of getting pneumococcal disease?

Pneumococcal disease can cause substantial morbidity and mortality, especially in the very young, the elderly, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those with anatomical or functional asplenia.

Who should get the Vaccine?

The vaccine is available for free through your GP if you are:

• 65 years or older
• aged 2 or over and in an at-risk group

The consultation is free if you have a medical card or GP visit card.
